Win’s Up Doc trade grade: B+

Trade Summary:
This one hurts for Hall. Berrios is a young player – only 28 years old – who has many years left in the majors. They just might not be good years. This trade hurts the most, because there were real assets for Berrios on the table earlier in the year – potentially as high as a 2nd NBA – but he just hasn’t performed.

Last year, splitting time between Minnesota and Toronto, Berrios had a 3.5 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP – very good numbers. But this year, it doesn’t take long too see how far he’s fallen off. His ERA is down over 1.5 points to 5.22. His WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) is down to 1.36. His home runs per 9 innings have completely ballooned from 1 HR to 1.8 HRs.

Worst of all his FIP (fielding independent pitching) is down over 1.5 points to 4.73 this season. This means that, while his ERA is a little bit inflated due to bad defense, he should have an ERA of 4.73 no matter what – a completely untenable number for a keeper.

Hall, therefore, gets a passing grade on this deal for not falling into the sunk cost fallacy. Berrios likely isn’t ever going to be the pitcher that we thought he’d be, so it makes sense to get something for him while he can. Good job by both for getting this deal done.
