MLB PROSPECT Power Rankings
A few notes on prospects:
(1) Prospects take (lots of) YOUR TIME to research. They aren’t easy to uncover, and if you aren’t doing your own personal due diligence on prospects, you’re going to be significantly behind other teams that do… especially over time.
(2) Prospects are the closest thing to rookie draft picks in MLB League of Leagues. If you aren’t doing research to get better prospects, you’re basically shirking draft picks and saying that draft picks aren’t worth the time to research.
(3) In terms of rankings (top FanTrax ranking the best barometer), you’re basically looking for 3 top-45 prospects.
There are 36 total prospects being kept, but the top prospects have been called up to the majors, as well as others in the top-36.
There are 3 prospect keepers per team but you have 5 on your roster so that you aren’t screwed if players get called up and you can build a little bit more depth if crazy things happen.
(4) Anyone outside the top-90 prospects probably should be dropped and anyone outside the top-70 prospects should be considered to be dropped (unless ranked highly in MLB.com or Fantax top-500.
(5) Obviously, you want your prospects to be as good as possible, but I, personally, wouldn’t be quite as worried about overspending in trades to land better prospects – especially right now. Prospects are still very hit-or-miss, and you could still hit on a lower-ranked prospect and miss on a high one. I’d recommend putting the time in to try to find prospects yourself and then make trades at the end of the season.
But without further ado here are the power rankings…
